Smart Home Installer vs Electrician: Who Does What?
An electrician can install the wiring a smart home system runs on, but usually cannot design, programme or commission the system itself. Those are two different trades with two different skill sets, and on most premium projects you need both. The electrician is responsible for safe, compliant mains wiring under Part P of the Building Regulations and BS 7671. The smart home integrator is responsible for system design, low-voltage and data infrastructure, programming, calibration and long-term support.
Confusion between the two is one of the most common reasons smart home projects go wrong in the UK, and it usually surfaces at the worst possible moment — when the plaster is on and the cable that should have been run to the plant room isn’t there.
Can an electrician install a smart home system?
An electrician can install the mains wiring, back boxes, containment and lighting circuits a smart home system depends on, and is legally required for that work. Most electricians are not trained to design a control system, configure a network, programme a Control4, Crestron or Lutron processor, or calibrate audio-visual equipment.

- Rule of thumb: one or two smart products in a finished home is electrician territory; a whole-house system with lighting scenes, audio, cinema and security on one platform needs an integrator leading the design
What does an electrician actually do on a smart home project?
An electrician installs and certifies the fixed electrical installation: the consumer unit, the circuits, the switch drops, the socket outlets, the containment, and the lighting circuits that a control system will later dim or switch. In England and Wales this work falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, which requires domestic electrical work to be designed and installed so that it protects people from fire and electric shock. Work is carried out to BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations.
Some categories of work — new circuits, consumer unit replacement, and work in special locations such as bathrooms — are notifiable to local building control. An electrician registered with a government-approved competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT and STROMA are the widely used ones) can self-certify that work and issue the certification directly, rather than the homeowner paying separate building control fees.
Scotland and Northern Ireland operate under their own building standards rather than Part P, though the underlying wiring standard is the same.
On a smart home project, the electrician is indispensable. They are the only party who can lawfully certify the mains installation. What they typically are not doing is deciding where the keypads go, how many circuits each room needs to be split into, what the scenes should do, or how the lighting system talks to the blinds.
What does a smart home integrator do that an electrician doesn’t?
An integrator’s work starts well before anything is installed and continues long after the electrician has left.
System design. Deciding which platform the house runs on (Control4, Crestron, Savant, Lutron and so on), how many lighting circuits each room needs to give the designer the scenes they want, where processors and amplifiers live, how much plant room space and cooling is required, and how every subsystem connects.
Cable schedules. A detailed, room-by-room document specifying every cable type, run and termination — Cat6A to each access point and touchscreen, speaker cable to each in-ceiling position, HDMI or fibre to each display, control cable to blinds and gates. This is the single most valuable document on the project, and it is what the electrician installs to.
Network design. Almost everything in a modern smart home runs across the network. VLAN segmentation, enterprise-grade access points, PoE budgets, switch capacity and structured cabling are integrator work, not electrical work. Programming. Writing and testing the logic that makes a “Good Night” button lock the doors, drop the blinds, fade every light over ninety seconds and set back the heating. Platform programming is dealer-restricted on Control4, Crestron and Lutron’s higher-tier systems — meaning only an authorised, trained dealer can access the software at all.
Commissioning and calibration. Levelling and time-aligning a Dolby Atmos system, calibrating a projector to a known standard, tuning dimmer curves so LED lamps fade to black without flickering or dropping out. This is where a good system separates itself from an expensive one.

The overlap row that matters most is cabling. On a well-run project the integrator produces the cable schedule and the electrician’s team installs it during first fix, with the integrator terminating and testing. That arrangement keeps one party accountable for the design while using the labour already on site.
Why the split matters more than it sounds
Most smart home projects that need rescuing did not fail because of poor workmanship. They failed because nobody owned the design.
Circuits that can’t be scened. A room wired as one lighting circuit can only ever be one level of light. Turning that into a room with separate pendant, downlight, wall-wash and lamp circuits after the ceiling is finished means lifting floors or chasing walls. The decision costs almost nothing at first fix and a great deal afterwards.
Missing infrastructure. No cable to the loft for an access point, no conduit to the garden for outdoor audio, no data run behind the TV position. Each omission is small; collectively they define what the house can and can’t do for the next fifteen years.
Dimming that doesn’t behave. LED lamps and dimmer modules interact in ways that are difficult to predict on paper. Matching load type to dimmer type, and tuning the low-end trim so lamps fade smoothly to off, is specialist work. Flickering at low levels is the most common complaint on lighting projects delivered without it.
Orphaned systems. Equipment installed by someone with no dealer authorisation can end up unsupportable — nobody else can access the programming, and the original installer has moved on. Our system recovery service exists almost entirely because of this.
When is an electrician enough?
Plenty of projects genuinely don’t need an integrator, and it’s worth being honest about where the line sits.
An electrician alone is usually the right call for:
- Replacing existing switches with smart switches on a like-for-like basis
- Fitting a smart thermostat or a video doorbell
- Adding a few connected circuits in one room
- Wiring a socket and data point for a television with a soundbar
An integrator should lead the project when:
- Lighting scenes are wanted across the whole house rather than in one room
- More than two systems need to work together (lighting, blinds, heating, audio, security, access)
- The property is a new build, major renovation or extension, where infrastructure decisions are being locked in
- A home cinema or multi-room audio system is part of the brief
- The household wants one interface rather than one app per product
- The property is large, listed, or has poor wireless coverage
Do you need both? How the two trades work together
On most premium UK projects, yes. The healthiest arrangement looks like this:
Design stage. The integrator produces the system design and cable schedule, and issues it to the architect, M&E consultant and electrical contractor. First fix. The electrician installs mains circuits, containment and back boxes to the schedule. Data, speaker and control cables go in at the same time — either by the electrical contractor or the integrator’s own team.
Second fix. The electrician terminates and certifies the mains installation. The integrator installs keypads, touchscreens, speakers, racks and processors.
Commissioning. The integrator programmes, tests and calibrates the system, then hands over with training and documentation.
Ongoing. The integrator holds the support relationship. The electrician returns for any subsequent electrical work — ideally in coordination with the integrator so nothing gets disconnected by accident.
What to ask before appointing anyone
Whether you’re speaking to an electrician or an integrator, these questions separate the well-prepared from the optimistic.
- Which manufacturers are you an authorised dealer for, and at what tier?
- Can I see a cable schedule from a comparable project?
- Who will own the programming, and will I be given the project files or a copy of the configuration?
- Who certifies the electrical installation, and under which competent person scheme?
- What does commissioning include, and how many days are allowed for it?
- What happens if something stops working in three years’ time?
- Are you a CEDIA member, and what is your team’s certification position?
Question three is the one most often skipped and most often regretted.
Frequently asked questions
Can my electrician install my smart home system? Your electrician can install the mains wiring, back boxes and containment the system depends on, and must certify that work under Part P. Designing, programming and commissioning a whole-house control system usually requires a smart home integrator, because platforms such as Control4, Crestron and Lutron restrict their programming software to authorised, trained dealers.
Is a smart home installer the same as an electrician? No. They are separate trades. An electrician is qualified and certified for fixed mains electrical work. A smart home integrator designs, configures and supports the control, network and audio-visual systems, and is not a substitute for a qualified electrician on the mains side.
Do smart home installers need to be qualified electricians? Not necessarily. Many integrators employ or subcontract qualified electricians for the mains work while their own team handles low-voltage cabling, programming and commissioning. What matters is that the mains installation is carried out and certified by someone competent and registered, and that the system design is owned by someone qualified to do it.
Is smart home wiring notifiable under Part P? Mains work such as new circuits or consumer unit changes is notifiable in England and Wales. Extra-low-voltage cabling — data, speaker and control cable — is not notifiable, but must still be installed safely and correctly segregated from mains cabling to avoid interference and safety issues.
Can I use my own electrician alongside a smart home integrator? Yes, and it’s common. The integrator issues the cable schedule and system design, and your electrician installs to it. This works well provided the schedule is agreed before first fix and both parties are clear on who terminates and tests what.
How much more does an integrator cost than an electrician? They aren’t directly comparable, because they’re doing different work. An integrator’s fee covers design, programming, commissioning and support in addition to installation labour. What happens if a smart home system is installed without an integrator? The usual outcomes are lighting circuits that can’t be scened properly, missing infrastructure that’s expensive to add later, dimming that flickers, and systems that can’t be supported because nobody has dealer access to the programming. These are all fixable, but retrofitting a fix costs considerably more than designing it correctly at the outset.
