How to Change Your Control4 Dealer in the UK (and Choose the Right One)

smart home ipad

Your Control4 system should be the easiest thing in your home to live with. When it is not, the problem is usually not the equipment. It is the support behind it. Calls go unanswered, a fault drags on for weeks, or the company that installed it has quietly stopped trading.

The good news is that you are not tied to the dealer who installed your system. Control4 has a formal process for moving your home to a new dealer, and you, the homeowner, are the one who starts it. This guide explains how that process works, what happens to your system along the way, and how to choose a Control4 dealer who will look after it properly.

Can you change your Control4 dealer?

Yes. Control4 systems are registered to a dealer, which Control4 calls your “Smart Home Pro”. The homeowner can change that dealer at any time through the Control4 app or their Control4 customer account. The new dealer must be Control4 certified, and the change completes once they accept your system in Control4’s dealer management platform.

You do not need your old dealer’s permission. You do need to choose your new dealer before you start, because you are left without a dealer in between.

Signs it is time to change your Control4 dealer

Most people who contact us about a takeover have put up with problems for months before acting. These are the most common reasons we hear:

  • Support has dried up. Emails go unanswered, or every visit is booked weeks ahead.
  • Faults keep coming back. The same issue is “fixed” repeatedly without anyone finding the cause.
  • Nobody is monitoring the system. Problems are only found when you notice them, rather than flagged remotely first.
  • Your system is running old software. If your system is still on Control4 OS 2, remote access and cloud services were retired on 4 August 2026. If your dealer has not raised this with you, that tells you something.
  • The dealer has closed or been taken over. Some installers stop trading or stop supporting older projects.
  • Nothing is documented. You have no record of how the system was set up, what is installed where, or what your network passwords are.
  • The house has changed and the system has not. An extension or renovation needs the system extended, and your installer cannot or will not do it.

Any one of these is a fair reason to look elsewhere. Two or more usually means the relationship is not going to improve.

How the Control4 dealer change works, step by step

The process below follows Control4’s own published procedure. The wording in the app or website may vary slightly between versions, but the steps are the same.

  1. Choose your new dealer first. Speak to them, ask the questions later in this guide, and agree that they will take your system on. They must be a certified Control4 dealer to appear in the list.
  2. Log in to your Control4 account. Use the Control4 mobile app or your account at customer.control4.com. In the app, the option sits in the support section, under your current professional integrator.
  3. Open your Smart Home Pro settings. On the website, go to My Account, then Smart Home Pro, then select Change My Pro.
  4. Give a reason for the change. Control4 asks you to choose one from a list.
  5. Confirm you understand. A message explains that your system will have no dealer support or maintenance until a new dealer accepts it. This is why choosing your new dealer first matters.
  6. Select your new dealer. Search for them by company name and confirm you have picked the right business.
  7. Your new dealer accepts. Your system moves into a holding account, and you and your old dealer both receive an email. Your new dealer then sees a pending request in their system and accepts it. If they decline for any reason, you are emailed and asked to choose another dealer.

In most cases, this part takes minutes on your side. The real work starts afterwards, when your new dealer gets to know your system.

What happens to your old dealer’s access?

Once your system has moved, your old dealer no longer has access to your device list, configuration or client services through Control4’s platform. They cannot make changes to your system remotely, and they will not receive alerts about it.

What if the change will not go through?

Control4’s process relies on your system having been properly handed over to you in Control4’s dealer platform at the end of the original installation. If that never happened, or your system was not registered for remote management, the online change cannot be completed by you alone.

This is more common than it should be, particularly on older or unfinished projects. It is not a dead end. Your new dealer can work with Control4 to establish ownership of the system and bring it under their management.

What to ask your old installer for

Before or during the switch, ask your previous installer for anything they hold about your system. Even a partial set of information saves time and money for your new dealer:

  • Network details, including router, switch and Wi-Fi passwords
  • A list of the equipment installed and where it is located
  • Any drawings or cable schedules from the original installation
  • Details of third-party subscriptions, licences and warranties
  • Whether a recent backup of your Control4 project exists

If your old installer does not respond, do not worry. A capable dealer can still survey and document your system from scratch. It simply takes longer.

What a new Control4 dealer should check first

A good dealer will not start changing things on day one. The first visit should be a structured health check of your system, so that both of you understand what you have. Expect it to cover:

  • Software version. Which version of Control4 your system runs, and whether it can be updated.
  • Controllers and devices. The model and condition of your controllers, touchscreens, keypads and dimmers, and which are approaching the end of their supported life.
  • The network. In our experience, a weak or badly configured network sits behind a large share of “Control4 problems”. Our guide to premium home networking for smart homes explains why.
  • Programming. How scenes, schedules and keypads have been set up, and whether the programming is tidy enough to maintain.
  • The equipment rack. Cooling, power protection, cable management and labelling.
  • Remote monitoring. Whether the hardware needed for proactive, remote support is in place.

At the end, you should receive a clear written summary of what is working, what is not, and what needs to happen next, in order of priority. Our smart home system recovery service starts in exactly this way, with an on-site survey and a resolution report before any remedial work is agreed.

How to choose a Control4 dealer in the UK

Every certified dealer can sell you Control4 equipment. Far fewer are set up to support complex systems well over many years. These are the questions worth asking before you switch.

Do you have programmers in-house?

Control4 systems are only as good as their programming. A dealer with in-house programmers can diagnose problems and make changes without waiting on a subcontractor.

How do you provide support, and how quickly do you respond?

Ask what happens when something goes wrong on a Friday evening. Look for remote monitoring, a proper ticketing system, a named service manager and clear response times. Ask whether support plans range from remote-only to faster on-site response, so you pay for the level you need.

Do you take over systems installed by others?

Taking over another company’s work requires different skills from a new installation. Ask how many takeovers the dealer has completed and what their process is.

What is your Control4 dealer status?

Control4 recognises its dealers at different levels, based on the quality and volume of their work. Ask about the dealer’s status and how long they have held it.

Are you a CEDIA member?

CEDIA is the industry association for home technology professionals. Membership, and staff training through CEDIA, signal that a company works to recognised design and installation standards.

Can I see examples and visit you?

A dealer confident in their work will show you completed projects and let you see systems running in a showroom. You can visit our Leeds showroom or our Cheadle showroom by appointment.

What about the other systems in my home?

Most Control4 homes also include lighting control, audio, video, security and networking. A dealer who can support all of it gives you one point of contact instead of several.

What does it cost to switch Control4 dealer?

Changing dealer through Control4’s process does not cost anything in itself. The costs come from the work your new dealer does to understand and support your system. These usually fall into three areas:

  • An initial survey or health check. This is usually a fixed fee, depending on the size of the system.
  • Remedial work, if needed. This ranges from reprogramming and network fixes to replacing failed or unsupported hardware. A good dealer will explain what is essential and what can wait.
  • Ongoing support. This is an annual support plan matched to how you use the property and how quickly you need help.

Be wary of a dealer who quotes for a full replacement before surveying what you have. In many takeovers, most of the wiring, speakers and keypads can be kept.

Is it the same for Crestron and Lutron systems?

Not quite. Control4’s homeowner-led process is unusually straightforward. With Crestron and Lutron systems, there is no equivalent self-service step for the homeowner. A new installer’s access depends on the passwords, programming files and documentation left by the original installer.

Where those are missing, the system can usually still be recovered. It may mean reprogramming parts of the system from scratch, which takes longer but often produces a cleaner, easier-to-use result. We support both platforms, and our Crestron home automation review and Lutron lighting control guide explain how they differ from Control4.

Frequently asked questions

Will I lose my scenes and settings if I change Control4 dealer?

No. Changing dealer moves the management of your system, not the system itself. Your scenes, schedules and settings stay on your controller. Your new dealer will normally take a backup at their first visit before making any changes.

Does my old dealer have to agree to the change?

No. The homeowner starts the change through the Control4 app or customer account, and the new dealer accepts it. Your old dealer is notified by email but does not need to approve it.

How long does it take to change Control4 dealer?

Your part takes a few minutes online. The new dealer then accepts the request. Allow a few weeks for a survey and a full understanding of your system, depending on its size.

What if my Control4 dealer has gone out of business?

You can still move to a new dealer. If your system was registered for remote management, use the normal process to select your new dealer. If it was not, a new dealer can work with Control4 to bring your system under their management.

Do I need new equipment when I change dealer?

Not usually. Most systems can be taken over as they are. New equipment is only needed where hardware has failed, is no longer supported, or cannot run the software you need, such as older systems still on Control4 OS 2.

Can I look after my Control4 system myself?

Day-to-day use, yes. Programming changes, software updates and fault-finding are carried out by a certified dealer using Control4’s professional tools, which is why the choice of dealer matters.
