The Brief
Our clients were looking to for a company to provide a complete turn key service to transform a large (approximately 10m x 5m) unused room in the basement of their home into an entertainment space for the whole family and groups of friends. The room needed to change from being a cold and uninviting space, to providing a warm, cozy atmosphere. A high quality cinema area to enjoy movies and big sporting events in great quality was a must as well as being able to provide wider entertainment and fun for children of various ages to enjoy.
The Design
3D modelling, mood boards and samples were provided throughout the design phase to allow the clients to visualise the space and be confident in the final look of all finishes.
The final design scheme featured walls which were fabric lined with acoustic treatments applied throughout approximately 75% of the wall space hidden behind the fabric panelling. A natural wall void was put to good use to provide a hidden snack bar area with fridge, popcorn machine and sweets display along with the audio visual and smart equipment to run the room – this proved very popular with the children on completion!
Cabinetry to the screen wall provided a display area for the clients large vinyl collection with sliding panels that would hide the projector screen when not in use and when the cinema was being used, these panels would slide away to cover the vinyl display.
Given the screen was hidden when not in use we created a bulkhead over the pool table for a lighting feature which also housed the projector to ensure it didn’t spoil the look of the room.
An Epson 9400 4k projector, Projector 20 foot wide acoustically transparent screen, Apple TV, Blu-Ray player, PS4 and Sky Q provide crisp, clear and natural images, bright enough to enjoy, even with the rooms blinds open and a hidden socket below the sofa which will allow the client to plug in his laptop for video conferencing meetings when working from home.
A Yamaha reference integrated receiver, Sonance reference in wall and ceiling speakers and subwoofers provide a 7.4.2 configuration Dolby Atmos surround sound system which works exceptionally well in the space and delivers powerful, detailed sound from movies and music.
Lighting and Smart Systems
Lighting the room was key and there are 6 circuits of lighting in the room all controlled via Lutron Graffic Eye system with a bespoke engraved bronze keypad which matches the bronze sockets and wall lights used throughout. The lighting designs allows flexible and easily controlled lighting to suit each use of the room.
The lighting blinds, heating and entertainment systems in the room are all easily controlled via a Control4 smart remote and IPad interface allowing complete operation of everything in the room by the whole family.
