Creating The Perfect Gaming Screening Room
Cloud Imperium Games are a pioneering gaming company, famous for their vast, immersive AAA rated space games; Star Citizen and Squadron 42.
Cloud Imperium contacted Finite Solutions to provide a turn key solution for the design and build of a large screening room as part of their new state of the art head office in Manchester. The room is approximately 11m x 6m x 4m and was required to comfortably seat approximately 20 people with a post production desk to seat 4 users. A flexible solution was essential to allow management, audio, video and production teams to evaluate new elements of their games in a wide variety of formats as well as facilitating high quality presentations and video conference calls.
Starting from a shell in an open plan area of the building our first task was to model the space to ensure we could deliver the sound proofing, interior acoustic optimisation and viewing angles that would facilitate adherence to the relevant industry standards. Step two was to design a stylish room interior with cues to Star Citizens space concept. After various 3D model renders, interior finishes and lighting sample selection and seating choices the concept was agreed and our fit out team began the build works.
The Technical Solution
To deliver the level of quality and flexibility required the core of the surround sound system uses the Trinnov Altitude 32 processor. An M&K speaker system is utilised due to the clean, neutral sound and heritage of robust, reliable performance in studio applications. A Dolby Atmos 9.4.6 system featuring 300 and 150 series speakers and 4x X15+ THX Dominus certified subwoofers provides a powerful and immersive cinematic experiences with the clarity necessary for critical monitoring.
The video system was initially a JVC NZ9 projector but after the room was complete the team found they used the room allot more than expected and they required a more powerful and capable projection system. Further to demonstrations the Cloud Imperium team were blown away by the Christie M4K25+ projector, and Lumagen video processor, able to deliver over 25,000 lumens of brightness meaning 500 nits on the 5m wide screen and the full REC2020 colour space via its triple DLP laser engine.
To ensure the system is easy to use a Crestron control system provides in wall and desk top touch panel control over the rooms lighting and climate controls and simple, yet powerful and flexible, control of the various ways the rooms audio visual systems can be used.
Calibration and Customisation
To ensure that the room delivers the best best possible performance and realises the full impact of the investment made a considerable amount of time was invested in calibration.
Before, during and after calibration was completed we worked closely with Cloud Imperium to ensure we fully understood the specific usage cases, flexibility and functionality they required from the system. Ultimately this required pre set calibration modes saving for a wide variety of options which are then recalled simply through the Crestron control interface.
Full ISF video calibration was completed on the Lumagen and Christie combination by Gordan Fraser, whom Finite have worked with for many years and Trinnov calibration of all sounds modes was completed in house by our factory trained engineers.
The end result is a room we are very proud of which delivers exactly what Cloud Imperium need from their screening facilities.
