The Brief

When our client first contacted us he was looking to refurbish an existing but old and unused games room in an outbuilding of his home in to a sleek modern games room and cinema room. After visiting our show home and experiencing our dedicated cinema room he initially felt that he would like to partition the room in two and have a dedicated cinema room with huge projection screen and a separate bar and pool room.

But after discussion of what he really wanted from the space as a whole we advised him that there was a better solution.

The Solution

The solution we proposed was to keep the room large and open and install a dual use entertainment system comprising a large 60″ plasma for use during the day with the windows and doors open to the garden with a 9 foot wide projection screen and drop down projector emerging from the ceiling at the touch of a button which would also dim the lights and close the blackout blinds to transform the room in to a high performance dedicated cinema room.

After providing 3-D room drawings, lighting design and samples of the fabric panels for the walls the client was totally sold on the concept and we were given the go ahead to proceed.

Integrated Technology

To deliver the level of performance the client wanted, a high end specification of equipment was provided which included, Runco projection, screen research acoustically transparent electric projector screen, Pioneer 60″ Kuro plasma, B&W in wall and in ceiling speakers, Arcam FMJ amplifiers and processor and Philips Pronto touch screen control to make everything simple to use. Due to the retro fit nature of the project Rako wireless lighting control was incorporated with DMX colour changing control of the bar lights, fibre optics and light tape between the acoustic wall panels plus integrated silent gliss black out blinds to all windows. A Middle Atlantic equipment rack was provided to house all the equipment which was hidden in behind a concealed door in the acoustically panelled wall.

Design and Installation

All room build design was completed by Finite Solutions to allow the client’s existing contractors to build the new stud work walls, run new audio visual and lighting cables and construct the bespoke bar. Finite Solutions provided detailed CAD drawings of all wall elevations and material requirements, project managed the entire process to ensure all works were completed accurately and to the required standard.

Upon completion of the main building and decorating works, Finite Solutions engineers installed all of the audio visual equipment in the room and the main pre built AV rack and acoustic wall panels (these were used to aid the acoustics in the room as the floor had to be solid wood to allow spills of drinks etc from the bar). Our preferred electrical contractor then installed the lighting control system and light fittings.

After all works are completed the required ISF picture calibration and acoustic set up, lighting scenes programming and touch screen control programming were completed to ensure optimisation of the rooms performance and one touch simplicity of use.

End Result

This room delivers on all counts, provided a light contemporary space for entertaining, listening to music and watching sports during the day and at the touch of the “Movie Time” button, lights dim, the projector lowers from the ceiling and a true high end cinema performance is delivered which, thanks to the rooms acoustic treatments and high end equipment is absolutely jaw dropping.
