Smart Home Systems are where technology meets interior design to create your dream home. It allows for the automation of smart home devices in the home that were previously controlled in isolation, such as light switches or heating. Smart home automation brings together security, heating, entertainment and more, in one central system allowing them to work together. Not only does this save time, but it is more convenient and more efficient.

Currently, many city smart homes consist of several isolated smart home gadgets with an app to work a single device. However, professional and luxury smart home solutions reach beyond, turning on a single device with your voice assistant. It allows you to operate everything together with a single remote, screen or app and can even be programmed to operate independently. Internet connected devices are the future and with a home automation system, you can be at the forefront.

  • A big advantage of having a smart home is being able to combine all of your entertainment devices into one system. This means you don’t need several different apps for different devices, as you can operate everything from one central point. You can also create whole-house audio systems, so you can listen to music in every room, or even outdoors.

A home entertainment system allows you to enjoy your favourite music or your favourite film in every corner of the home with multi-room audio and visual equipment. Through automation and expert design, screens and speakers can be concealed within the walls or ceiling and appear if needed, giving your living space a sleeker, more modern appearance.

  • Another popular feature of smart homes is a home cinema room. This can be installed in any room and used to watch TV, films or sport on a big screen with surround sound. You can also use a cinema room for gaming or listening to music. The options are endless, and a cinema room can be tailored to your specific requirements with bespoke seating, and decoration making it a very personal space in your home.

  • A smart home can integrate all of your smart devices into one system giving you access to all the devices in your own home. This might include your TV, sound system, lights, security cameras, thermostat and more. The advantage of this is that it can simplify your life allowing you to manage everything from one central location, whether that’s a tablet, keypad, smartphone or a voice-activated assistant.

  • Smart home lighting meaning that you can programme specific lights for different requirements or times of the day. It can even be programmed to activate or deactivate depending on whether anyone is at home, in a specific room or within a certain radius.

    Creating Lighting Scenes
Smart lighting scenes can be designed to set mood lighting for entertaining or relaxing, and can even be used to make your home look occupied when you’re away on holiday. Smart lighting is also more energy efficient than traditional lighting, as it only uses the power that is needed.

With internet access you can have the lights switched on when you’re half a mile away from home, ready for you to arrive. If you’re away from your London home for an extended period of time, you can still have control over your lights (as well as all other aspects of the smart home).

Lighting sequences aren’t all about artificial lighting either. If you are fortunate enough to get a lot of natural light in your home, you can use smart home automation technology to automatically close blinds to adjust how much you let in.

  • Smart technology enhances your home’s security capabilities. You can instantly receive notifications on your mobile when a device is triggered, such as CCTV or movement sensors. You’re able to connect CCTV cameras to your audiovisual system the moment you receive that notification and view what is happening in and around the home. With the right equipment, you can even engage in conversation with people at the door or on the grounds of your property.

Smart home security can also be used to monitor other aspects of the home, such as flood sensors in the basement or carbon monoxide detectors. Remote monitoring means that you can have complete peace of mind while away from the property.

  • Home automation systems allow you greater cooling and heating control, saving you energy in the process. If programmed, the heating or cooling system in your home can switch off the moment you leave, meaning you use only the energy you need.

A smart thermostat can also be set to turn on the heating or cooling before you arrive home, so it’s comfortable for you as soon as you step through the front door or switch off the heating in your home office at the end of the working day. On average, smart homes can save up to 30% on their energy costs when used correctly.

A home automation system can achieve a lot. It can provide multi room audio and media, allowing you to enjoy your music or movies in any room of your house. It can also control your lighting, climate, and security, making your home more comfortable and safe.

Additionally, a home automation system can save you money by reducing your energy consumption. By automating your lights and appliances, you can reduce your power bill and conserve resources.

Moreover, smart home automation can increase your safety by providing features such as fire and carbon monoxide detection, as well as automatic door locks and security cameras. In short, a smart home automation system can make your life easier, safer and more sustainable. Consequently, more and more people are choosing to install these systems in their homes.

The team here at Finite were recently commissioned to design and install smart home solutions for a beautiful London home.

The brief required the integration of an existing home automation system that had not been completed, with the latest technology, to create a discreet smart home blending seamlessly with the interior designers’ plans.

The Finished Home Automation System

The finished project included a Control4 system that gave the client fingertip control of the lighting, heating, cooling, security, entertainment and blinds throughout the property. All of the equipment was concealed within the ceilings, walls and floors so as not to interrupt the flow or appearance of the rooms or distract from the client’s impressive art collection.

The specification for this home included:
  • Audio visual systems
  • The Hidden drop-down cinema system
  • Door Entry
  • Heating and Cooling via a Janus integration driver to the BMS system
  • Silent Gliss blinds and curtains
  • Lutron lighting
  • Texecom Intruder Alarm Security system
Drop Down Cinema

Our client opted for a drop-down cinema system (rather than a dedicated cinema room) and care was taken to disguise all the audio visual equipment for this when not in use. The speakers are flush with the ceiling and the projector and motorised screen drop down when needed, so as not to interrupt the flow of the room or distract from the artwork on the walls.

With remote access to their property and their security system, the result was a stunning home that our clients can control from anywhere in the world, safe in the knowledge that their property is secure and energy-efficient.
