	Featuring in the television program "Britain's Best Homes" this ultra modern flat in London was an empty shell when we were first called in to provide a simple but high quality cinema for the lounge.

	The client is an architect and as such demanded a home cinema system that could be completely integrated into the living space.

Source Equipment and Amplification

A bespoke media centre PC was built by Finite Solutions to provide true 1080i image up scaling from all DVDs and to store the clients 100+ DVDs and CDs which can then be browsed through on the projector screen.

The cinema audio is provided by a Denon 3805 amplifier which is hidden away with the rest of the source equipment completely out of sight.

The beauty of this type of system is that access is only required to the equipment when loading on new media as all existing DVDs and CDs can be accessed through the media centre via remote control.

Cinema Screen and Lighting

A dedicated Sky box provides independent Sky reception from the rest of the house, but the Sky+ box can also be accessed via the Opus system to allow for recording and playback facilities.

Two 6 zone Luton Grafik eyes provide lighting control over the lounge, reception area and kitchen. The lighting system consists of over 40 light fittings including spots, lamps, sconces, ambient floor lighting and picture lights.

Projector

To achieve the high quality image the glass was coated in a specialist frosting which provides a superb reflective surface which meant a crisp bright picture could be achieved from the Mitsubishi HC2000 projector, mounted on the ceiling at the rear of the room.

In order to keep the projector as discreet as possible, a false ceiling was built down from the existing ceiling. This allowed all the cables to be completely hidden, but also ensured that the projector was positioned for an optimum throw angle.

Loudspeakers

Again, because discreetness was very important for the client, the best option was in ceiling speakers. In wall speakers were not an option because of the construction of the property.

In order to create true front and rear sound from the in ceiling speakers we used THX directional in ceiling speakers. Whilst these are hidden in the ceiling, the directional cones and tweeters give the illusion that the sound is coming from directly in front of and behind the listener.

The system was then completed with an MJ acoustics reference 1 subwoofer for a floor shaking cinema experience.

Control

The control method chosen was a Nevo SL multi remote control with wireless connectivity. This allows the remote to work from anywhere in the room and does not need to be in direct line of sight with any of the equipment.

This allowed all the equipment to be housed discreetly in a dedicated comms cupboard which only needs to be accessed when adding new DVDs or CDs to the media centre.

Macros were programmed so that with a single button press, the lights dim, all the equipment is switched on, set to the correct inputs, and the projector turns on.
